Enterprise Content Management

The term enterprise content management, referred to as ECM, is essentially the different types of technology used to organize various content that is obtained, managed, collected and shared by those technologies. Since technology and everyday life progresses quickly, there became a need to manage and control information from different sources. Enterprise content management makes it possible to combine data such as digital images and microfiche. An effective ECM does not need to be seen by users; it simply needs to combine, manage and share information from different sources so they can be read as one.

The Five Components

Enterprise content management's original definition consisted of five components: capture, manage, store, preserve and deliver. To capture data means that all content is received by an organization using a multitude of programs. The ECM gathers all of the data and begins classifying it. To manage the content, the content is labeled fixed or active. Active content is anything currently working or being worked on and fixed content are things from the past such as old monetary transactions or work orders. The enterprise content management system will then store content; this is a temporary step for information that is not going to be preserved or archived. Preserving is used for long-term data and content to be archived. The deliver component uses the manage, store and preserve portions of the enterprise content management in three different manners. The purpose for the three various manners is to provide users with the best way to use the application, to make everything flow together the best way possible.
